First game of the season, a different, looking Stokesley to lined up against a strong Newcastle second Xl who will be fighting for promotion this season.
Even start to the game with both teams creating chances, the deadlock was broken after approximately 20 minutes as the ball slipped by Ben Enderwick through to Phil Molyneux who clinically dispatched off his reverse of his stick in true Molly style.
Stokesley then enjoyed a good passage of play, the defensive unit of Walker and Walker, with the debutante Harry Bell, keeping Newcastle at bay. Approximately six minutes before the half another well worked move by Sam Pennington resulted in a short corner. Stopped by Heayns, slipped in by Atha and poked home by Adam Derry, halftime 2-0.
The second half saw significant change in formation and the game opened up with a plethora of chances for the away side. Surely Will Tweddle will be kicking himself after missing glaring chance with what could have possible been the entire Newcastle team awaiting for a pass!
Eventually the pressure of Newcastle penetrated the Stokesley backline and a well worked move resulted in a slip with the ball finding its way past the otherwise impeccable Matt Hibbert. The game was rounded off about 10 minutes from time with another clinical strike from Phil Molyneux opening up his account for the season.
Great display by everyone involved and a great thanks to Newcastle for making the journey south.
Next game: Durham City 2’s HOME (Sunday 3rd September 2023, 10:15 push back)
