MOM: J Hawkins

J Hawkins x1

A Derry x1

Stokesley put on a strong performance in their second preseason match against Marton Furness. The game started evenly, with both teams testing each other's defences. However, it wasn’t long before Jack Hawkins, making only his second appearance for the second team, capitalised on a break down the left side to open the scoring for Stokesley.

The match remained balanced with chances for both sides, but Stokesley’s midfield, led by the Atha brothers, continued to impress with their solid play. About 25 minutes in, Stokesley earned a short corner. Although the initial shot from Alexander on the left was blocked, the ball fell kindly to Alistair Anderson at the top of the D, who fired home to make it 2-0.

Shortly after, a brilliant aerial pass down the line found Heayns, who skillfully flicked it over his head and played in Alexander. His quick pass across goal was tapped in, seemingly giving Stokesley their third goal. However, a controversial umpire decision saw the goal disallowed.

Heading into halftime, Stokesley were in a commanding position. A slight formation tweak at the break aimed to strengthen their defensive press, anticipating a more aggressive approach from Furness in the second half. As expected, Furness came out strong and created several chances, but Stokesley’s defence, anchored by Adam, Walker and Armitstead, stood firm.

With about 10 minutes remaining, Stokesley put the game beyond doubt. A well-executed move through the midfield found Adam Derry at the edge of the box, who calmly slotted the ball past the Furness keeper to make it 3-0. Both teams continued to play with good spirit, and in the final seconds, Stokesley earned another short corner. Anderson's drag flick was initially stopped by a Furness defender, but his second attempt found the roof of the net, sealing a 4-1 victory.

This marked two strong performances in two days for Stokesley, who now look forward to a different kind of challenge next weekend.

Jack Hawkins was deservedly named Man of the Match for his efforts.

A great friendly atmosphere and always good to go back to the Chapel for a few drinks and the now obligatory preseason Dominoes.

Next game: Scarborough M1 Neutral (Sunday 25th August 2024, 12:00 push back)
