Men's M2 - Stockton M2 (A) - 5-2 (L) - Preseason

Date: Wednesday 4th September 2024, 19::00

MOM: J Hawkins

Goals: C Heayns, K O'Connor

In their final preseason outing, Stokesley faced an exceptionally strong Stockton second XI. It was a stern test ahead of the County Cup on Sunday, where Stokesley are expected to face Stockton again at some point. The squad was once again composed of a youthful lineup, including Walker, Boal, Derry, Bell, Lane, Hawkins, and Gate, competing in a game structured in four quarters. From the outset, it was clear the match would be a challenging one, a situation made worse by a last-minute oversight involving a missing goalkeeper kit, which disrupted the pre-match warm-up.

Stockton wasted no time in asserting their dominance, quickly taking the lead and putting Stokesley under considerable pressure. However, after the first break and some tactical adjustments, Stokesley came out much stronger, managing to hold Stockton at bay for the remainder of the quarter.

The second half saw a noticeable shift in momentum as Stokesley began to control the game. A brilliant reverse-stick cross from Yum Hawkins found Heayns, who expertly deflected the ball past the Stockton goalkeeper, bringing Stokesley back into contention. Stockton responded swiftly with a close-range finish to restore their two-goal cushion, but Stokesley continued to fight, moving the ball well and creating an opening for O'Connor, who calmly slotted home to reduce the deficit to one goal once again.

Despite their resilience and strong showing, Stokesley were dealt a blow by the absence of experienced player Armitstead, and after weeks of intense hockey, fatigue began to take its toll. Stockton capitalised on this in the closing stages, netting two late goals to secure a 5-2 victory.

Deputising in goal, Dawson Clarke delivered an impressive performance despite his usual outfield role, while Wallace and Walker remained solid throughout the match. Although the final result wasn't what Stokesley had hoped for, it capped off a productive preseason that has seen the team grow and develop.

Overall, it was another promising performance, with plenty of positives to take forward into the competitive season.

Despite the late heartbreak, it was a valuable run-out for Stokesley. A big thank you goes to Newcastle for their continued hospitality—it's always a pleasure to visit and face such worthy opposition.
